West Bengal Tourist Associastion

The history of the establishment of West Bengal Tourist Association, Uttarpara is interesting. The members of Uttarpara youngsters Association, a premier Association of this small but gorgeous town, organized a big tour in 1959. This tour was very successful. Encouraged by the success of this tour some members of this Association established a tourist organization with Dr. Mriganka Bhusan Banerjee as its first president. They also elected Shri. Monimohan Haldar as its first Secretary. This organization then undertook many short and long tours. Side by side the number of members was increasing. In course of time West Bengal Tourist Association emerged as a well-organized Association in 1960 when it was shifted from a small room to its own building at Jay Krishna Street, Uttarpara. On the opening day many well known literary personalities visited the building. The name of the building "Pari" was given by Smt. Mahasweta Dabi, a very famous littérateur of West Bengal. A number of eminent persons like Probodh Kumar Sanyal, Dakhinaranjan Thakur who are well known in Bengali literary field, Uma Prasad Mukherjee, a famous mountain lover and litterateur, P C Sarkar (Senior), a world famous magician visited this organization on a number of occasions and spoke very highly of it. They also became member of this organization.

The principle objectives are :
(i) to promote tourism

(ii) to faster the habit of traveling among the members

(iii) to develop the spirit of fellow feelings among the member

(iv) to collect information about tourists spots in India and undertake tours to these spots accordingly

(v) to establish a library consisting of books, magazines relating to tourism only

The Association which is a registered one is still functioning as an institution dedicated to the promotional and allied activities on tourism on a purely amateural basis. Seven or eight tours on an average are undertaken every year. Members with their families and guests are allowed to participate in the tours.

The following functions are organized by the Association every year.

(i) May 1 - Foundation Day
(ii) First Sunday of the Year - Picnic
(iii) Vijaya Sammilani

Famous personalities from Tourists Organizations are invited to give lectures on tourism. Member along with their families and guest are free joining these functions. The Association has its own library consisting of various types of books, magazines on tourism and allied subjects and is maintaining a free reading room to cater to the needs of all categories of people. The library is also playing an important role in the research work for students.

The number of books and magazines are now over 2500. A yearly magazine "Jatri" is published every year. Members are encouraged to write articles on tourism. The magazines so far published are very good and draw praise from one and all.

In the end it may be said that this organization is one of its kind in the State of West Bengal with no help from any quarters other than its members.
